Community supports the VFW
By John T. Ryan
Members of Peru VFW Post 309 responded when their country called and the local community responded last Sunday, March 1st, when the Post asked for help. Community members turned out in large numbers at a fund-raiser for the financially strapped organization. Committee Chairman Reginald Besaw reports that $7,800 was raised thanks to many people who attended, donated and worked at the event. Three bands provided music throughout the afternoon and there was great food, beverages and auctions. Asked how much the money would help the VFW Besaw responded, “We still aren’t out of the woods, but this helps.” Besaw said officer elections will be conducted in April and that future fund-raisers and more uses for the building are being discussed.
VFW Post 309 constructed the building on Route 22B near Schuyler Falls in 1980 and not unlike many community organizations, the VFW has been challenged by high operating costs and an aging membership. The Post has about 180 members. Anyone who would like to assist the VFW is welcome to call Reginald Besaw at 643-2347. The Press Republican wrote a story on a previous date.
