Here’s what caused last night’s power outage

Don McBrayer sent in this report. He lives at the corner of Route 22 and the Bear Swamp Road.

On March 6th around 7PM a transformer blew in front of the Grand Union
knocking power out for everyone on Rt. 22 and Bear Swamp Road. I was
walking my dog at the time and saw the brilliant blue ball of fire on
top of the pole. About ten minutes before that, a small disruption
dimmed the lights, but didn’t knock them out. I was told by someone from
the fire department that a wire was also down. I did not see this
myself. Traffic was blocked from Elmore Street to Pleasant Street and had to
be rerouted. State Police also controlled traffic at the Bear Swamp Road
and Rt22 intersection in front of my house. During the outage the only
houses with power was mine, and Pasquale’s Restaurant. I bet Scott
Bazzano was happy, he had all the customers to himself. We get our power
from lines on Union Road, not Rt.22. I’m glad it was warm last night,
and not one of those 15 below zero nights. I went to bed at 11PM, and at
that time NYSEG was still working on the problem. Power was restored this morning.
