19.6 miles on a warm Adirondack Saturday
By Jean Ryan
The hike to Redfield and Cliff (See photos) was a “makeup” climb for me as I had been sidelined by a stomach bug when Colleen Kaulfuss, Lori Clark and Joanne Kennedy climbed these two peaks in January. On Saturday, March 7, 2009 Colleen, Lori and I met Lyle Montgomery who had driven from Ogdensburg that morning to hike the two mountains with us. We met at Adirondack Loj outside of Lake Placid. We hiked in for 7.3 miles gaining 1000 feet to get to the base of these two mountains. From this point it was about a mile to Cliff’s summit. As Cliff’s name implies, it has numerous cliffs and there were three fairly steep cliffs which we carefully ascended and descended. Back at the base, we began our ascent of Redfield. The trek to Redfield involved a gain of an additional 1200 feet and was three miles round trip. This hike was a total distance of 19.6 miles and took us a bit under 12 hours.
