Burnham Financial & Excellus chosen for Employee Health Insurance

By Donald McBrayer

The Regular Town Board Meeting was held at 7PM on Monday, December 14. This marks the first Regular Meeting for newly seated Town Supervisor Peter Glushko, and Councilors Kregg Bruno and James Douglass. Also in attendance were Councilor Tom Powers, Town Clerk Kathy Flynn, and Town Attorney Don Biggs. Councilor Brandy McDonald was excused.

The agenda included an announcement that Burnham Financial would be the town employee health insurance broker, handling an Excellus Insurance program. According to Supervisor Peter Glushko Burnham was chosen over other brokers because they were the first to offer a fair across-the-board plan that had features such as a high-deductible option and solid retirement coverage. A motion passed to cut a check to Excellus in the amount of $15,975.93.  The total annual cost of the program will not increase over last year.

In other business Mr. Bruno suggested the town provide Christmas turkeys to the town employees. Mr. Powers expressed a concern that receiving a turkey might be an income tax issue and suggested this be considered before giving turkeys out.

Water and Sewer Superintendent Greg Timmons informed the board that the state will begin requiring all residences larger than duplexes and commercial properties in Peru with town water hookups to install and have inspected annually a back-flow prevention system. This system could be expensive for some properties. A series of workshops and public hearings will be scheduled before an ordinance is passed.

Highway Superintendent Mike Farrell addressed some complaints he received about lawns that were damaged during plowing following this week’s snowstorm. Mr. Farrell stated care is exercised during plowing, but until the ground is frozen, some damage is unavoidable. He went on to say snow removal takes priority during any storm and any damage that occurs will be addressed and fixed in the spring.

Donald McBrayer inquired about the snow removal equipment from the Town of Ausable that was used to clean the sidewalks following this week’s snowstorm. Mr. Farrell informed him that Peru would have access to it for the remainder of this winter.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:27 P.M.
