A few Peru motorists may have been inconvenienced by the October 15th Half-Marathon, but when they learn the results of the morning’s activities they should be very happy. Peru’s first Octoberfest Half-Marathon raised $32,000 to battle pulmonary fibrosis, the disease that afflicted the late Robert “Chip” Hamilton in whose honor the event was conducted. The day’s proceeds will be donated to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation to be used for research to find a cure for the disease.
Four hundred fifty men and women registered for the half-marathon and three hundred fifty actually ran on Peru’s beautiful country roads and hamlet streets. Ruth Hamilton LaClair, Chip’s daughter, organized the event. She said, “I want to thank all the race participants and everyone who worked so hard to make the Octoberfest Half-Marathon a success. It took about 150 volunteers, the cooperation of the Peru Fire Department and donations from many people and businesses.” Asked if she planned on conducting the half-marathon next year LaClair responded, “Absolutely! I’m going to keep doing it as long as I can.”
Ruth LaClair said she hopes that next year the entire Peru community will get involved by cheering the runners on and watching the race. This year’s volunteers arrived at 6 a.m., the race kicked off at 9 a.m. and everything was concluded by about 1 p.m. Next year everyone will be encouraged to stay for the food, drinks, entertainment and Peru hospitality.
