VFW Post 309 hosts impressive Memorial Day Observance
A small group of local residents, including several veterans, were in attendance at Memorial Day ceremonies hosted by Peru VFW Post 309. Post Commander Thomas Fusco Sr. served as Master of Ceremonies. Rev. Alan Shnob, Pastor of St. Augustine’s Church led the people in prayer. County Legislator Peter Keenan and Peru Town Supervisor Peter Glushko delivered brief remarks. The Plattsburgh Civil Air Patrol Honor Guard Squadron posted the American flag and former CAP Commander Lynn Wilke sounded TAPS. Former Post Commander John Mashtare sounded the bell as the names of deceased Post 309 members and Post 309 Auxiliary members were read.
Commander Fusco recalled past wars and conflicts, especially the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said, “Nothing comes without a price and sacrifice. That sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance.” County Legislator Peter Keenan spoke about teaching our young people the importance of freedom, democracy and Memorial Day. He thanked everyone in attendance, especially all veterans. Supervisor Peter Glushko said, “As we honor our patriots of past wars, let us honor our heroes of today.” He mentioned the current political campaigns and said debate is good and part of our democratic process. He added, “But there should be no debate on the importance of honoring those who served our country. Each new generation has a responsibility to preserve freedom and peace.”
