NCCCA announces Raku pottery class; Japanese pottery technique in the Clay Studio
The Jackie Sabourin Clay Studio at NCCCA will host a three-day workshop featuring the unique Japanese pottery process known as Raku. The session will take place Tuesday, 7/31 and Thursday, 8/2 from 6-8 p.m, and on Friday, 8/17 from 5-10 p.m. Cost is $100 for members, $110 for non-members with a materials fee of $10.
“This is the most exciting offering we have had in the Clay Studio since it opened,” says Janine Scherline, Executive Director of NCCCA. “Jenn Shutts, one of our experienced Clay Studio instructors will walk students through creating hand built and wheel thrown pieces on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 they will glaze their pottery and participate in an outdoor Raku pottery firing on the lawn of the Arts Center.”
“Using a modified Raku pottery process, the resulting pieces that the participants create will embody blackened clay and glazes with a beautiful metallic luster. The pottery is fired quickly and oxidized in burn barrels to obtain this intense and sometimes unpredictable end result,” says Jenn Shutts.
