Speed limit reductions may be coming for three town roads

By Donald McBrayer

The Town Board held their regular meeting on Thursday, November 8. Everyone except Councilor Brandy McDonald, who was excused, was in attendance.

Peru Highway Superintendent Mike Farrell informed the board that he had received several requests for speed limit reductions for three Peru roads: Telegraph Road (the entire road), Brand Hallow Road (from Rt. 22 to Clark Rd), and Eccles Road (from Felton Rd. to Brand Hallow Rd.). Farrell told the board that recent accidents and near misses have people concerned, and that he though the speed reduction is a good idea.

Town Councilor Sue Polhemus asked Farrell what the new speed would be. Farrell informed her that he is not in charge of setting speed limits. Farrell further explained the state does that, but only after a formal request by the Town Board, and only after evaluating the road to determine if the change is warranted.

The board then formally made the 3 requests by passing motions to that effect.

The Town Board also:

  • Passed a resolution to release a payment for the completion of the South Acres Park Sewer Project in the amount of $538,896.21. The funds are from a grant specific to that project.
  • Tabled a motion to pass the Town Budget, because they wanted to wait till Councilor Brandy McDonald was present to vote on it. The budget is expected to be adopted at the November 26th meeting.
  • Town Supervisor Peter Glushko and Councilor Sue Polhemus agreed to meet with the Library Board to discuss the freeze in the Library Budget. President of the Library Board Kara McBrayer requested the meeting so the Library Board may have a chance to discuss concerns with the budget freeze and to foster a continued dialogue between both boards.
  • Passed a motion to hire Jerry Watkins to paint the trim on the newly installed doors in the Town Hall and to repair and paint several interior walls. The cost will be $1,600. The idea of also painting the ceiling in the main meeting room for $2,500 was also discussed, but the board decided to hold off at this time.
  • Town Clerk Kathy Flynn informed the board that the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Gazebo was scheduled for Friday, November 30th with Santa arriving at 7PM.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20PM.

I have traveled these roads, (Brand hollow, Eccles) for my entire driving career. The need to post these roads down in speed is in my opinion unnecessary. I grew up on these roads from riding bicycle to present day. The two recent accidents are driver error. (Failure to stop, & failure to yield right of way). Not speed. I find that 55 is not to much to have “posted” on Brand Hollow and 45 given the nature of the curve on Eccles. On another thought, is it just a dream that the corner of Military Turnpike & Brand Hollow be changed back to the way it was with traffic stopped on Brand Hollow with signs. Seeing that the town spent well warranted time and funds to remove the rise in the terrain that hamperred the view to traffic on the Brand Hollow Rd.
Respectfully submitted,
