PLATTSBURGH, NY— The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts is proud to announce the upcoming exhibition, “Impromptu,” which features works by Lynn Manning and Erik Wilson on display in our Main Gallery from May 9^th to June 14^th, 2014. Pairing the photographic work of Manning and the painting and sculpture of Wilson, the show generates a dreamlike atmosphere of sublime landscapes and earthy pottery. The opening reception will be held May 16^th from 5:30-7:00 PM. This event is free to the public and refreshments will be served. 

Lynn Manning is a retired art teacher who is now celebrating the opportunity to photograph whenever the light is right without having to fit it around a work schedule.Manning has not been without a camera in her hand since her senior year of high school. She appreciates the evolution of the photographic process, starting in the darkroom, moving through the hybrid stage (film scanned and finished in Photoshop), to enthusiastically embracing digital photography. Manning’s work reflects this experience as her photographs are not simply images of landscapes, nature, and abandoned buildings, but capture the mysterious beauty andfantasia these sites can inspire.

Erik Wilson is a painter, potter, mentor and art teacher. After attending New York City’s School of Visual Arts, Utica’s Munson William Proctor Arts Institute, and SUNY Plattsburgh for graduate school, Wilson began teaching as Ceramics professor at SUNY Plattsburgh and Clinton Community College. He has now been teaching art at Peru Central High School for over 15 years. Wilson’s paintings break from tradition, often created with shaped canvases, moving doors, and cut out windows they embrace a surrealist emphasis on wonder and play.

NCCCA Museum Coordinator Christina Elliott commented on the show, stating “Although they work in different mediums with different motives, they are a great match. Manning’s work is photography of real places that induce a state of reverie, while Wilson’s work is based in surreal situations where reality can be read into the fantastic.”
