Bridge Construction to Begin on Monday
By John T. Ryan
Peru – On Monday, June 12, 2017, motorists will find the Jarvis Road closed to thru-traffic as construction crews begin replacement of the bridge adjacent to the Irwin’s Maple Grand Farm. Clinton County Highway Superintendent Al Rascoe said the project is expected to take approximately 90 days. New Century Construction of Watervliet, NY submitted the low bid of $765,000.
Rascoe said that the existing bridge is about 60 years old. Inspection reports indicate its footing has been gradually undermined by the Little Ausable River. The new bridge will meet the latest design standards and can be expected to last about 70 to 75 years. Rascoe said, “We’re trying to be proactive, so we’re replacing the bridge.”
Hundreds of motorists travel via the Jarvis Road daily including many correction officers living in Keeseville and Ausable Forks. Nearby Adirondack Farms will be heavily impacted because its trucks and machines travel to fields along the Military Turnpike and other nearby roads. Co-owner Jon Rulfs said, “It’s not our preference, but we’ll be traveling on Route 22 to the Military Turnpike as we harvest our forage crops. Fortunately, we moved most of our manure this spring. We’ll try to use the River Road as much as we can.”
