Main Street Improvements on Hold
Peru – The transformation of Main Street into a pedestrian-friendly, tree-lined street from Stewarts to the Dollar Store will not happen in 2017. Detailed plans were submitted to the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) last winter, but approval has not been received. At a November 2016 public meeting representatives of River Street Planning and Development, the town’s consultants on the project, stated that they anticipated rapid DOT approval with work beginning this summer. In light of the unfinished DOT review, the period to utilize the town’s $150,000 NYS grant has been extended until the end of 2018.
Over the past three years the Main Street Improvement Committee limited success involving business owners and residents in the planning process. Publicity was generated and a number of pubic meetings were held. At the town board’s July 10th meeting Counselor Donald McBrayer, the board’s liaison for the project, said he plans to invite North Main Street residents to participate in what he called a “walking audit” of the project plans.
