Jones Authored Bill Becomes Law
From the Office of Assemblyman Bill Jones
Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) announced that a bill he authored making it easier for kids to protect themselves from insect bites while at camp has been signed into law (Ch. 163 of 2017). The new law allows children attending overnight camp, summer day camp and traveling summer day camp to apply camp-authorized insect repellent with the written consent of a parent or guardian. Previously, children were required to provide a doctor’s note in order to carry and use insect repellent.
“It’s important that kids are able to protect themselves from the potential dangers associated with insect bites, especially during the summer when they’re spending a lot of their time outdoors,” Jones said. “This law will make it easier to keep kids safe and healthy while enjoying all the North Country has to offer.”
Camps will be required to maintain a record of each parent or guardian permission slip. Camp workers are also allowed to assist any child who is physically unable to apply the insect repellent themselves when directed by the child.
