Babbie Museum – A Hands-On Successful Experience

By John T. Ryan

Peru – Babbie Museum Volunteer Carol Rock presented an uplifting museum report to the Peru Town Board at its October 23rd meeting. Over the museum’s 83 days of operation in 2017 it entertained about 2,000 visitors. It enjoys the support from almost 50 local sponsors/donors and visitors give the museum 4.8 out of a 5 star online rating. Its Facebook page has almost 800 followers.

Almost 1,000 of the season’s visitors were students and parents from ten area schools participating in the the museum’s School Tour Program. Peru Elementary School’s 2nd graders participated. K-2 Principal Michelle Rawson commented, “Our students love the museum. It’s a hands-on experience with a variety of things to do. The students become immersed in the experience and they build knowledge.”

Special 2017 events included a Homesteading and Woodworking Weekend; a Hay, Harvest and Antique Tractor Weekend; a Kid’s Fair and Festival; and a Harvest Weekend. The museum volunteers participated in the Mooers Fire Department Labor Day and the Peru Applefest parades. Its float won a 1st First Prize Award in the Applefest Parade.

Other significant 2017 achievements included:
Beginning construction of pubic restrooms
Receipt of grants from the Charles R. Wood Foundation and the Stewarts Holiday Match
Weekly assistance from ARC and YMCA volunteers
Opening a garden shed display
Continued progress on restoring the Goshen Store
