“Andy Warhol: Prints and Photographs” Exhibition at The Strand Center for the Arts in February
PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Strand Center for the Arts, in partnership with Walter Early from the Plattsburgh State Art Museum, is pleased to present a selection of Andy Warhol’s original artwork. The exhibition opening will take place in The Strand Center Main Gallery on Friday, February 1, 2019 and a reception that is open and free to the public be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. that evening.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) established himself in New York as a defining Pop Artist: effortlessly blending high and low art. Inspired by popular culture and consumerism, his extensive output included painting, printmaking, photography, performance, sculpture, video, and design. Warhol’s life and work continue to influence artists of all ages today.
The Plattsburgh State Art Museum collection boasts more than 150 pieces by Warhol. The first gift of Polaroids and black and white photographs came in 2008 from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts as part of the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the foundation. These views from behind Warhol’s camera give a glimpse into the cult of personality inseparable from New York and Warhol’s Factory studio in the 1970s and 80s. Warhol transformed socialites, friends, and hangers-on into instant celebrities by using multiple exposures to lovingly capture the nuance of gesture in his subjects. The second gift from the Warhol Foundation arrived in 2013 consisting of colorful screen prints of historical figures, saints, and banal still life. The gift is representative of Warhol’s interest in celebrity, advertising, and the repeated image. An industrial process, screen printing allowed Warhol to enlarge and manipulate his photographs, reproducing layered art in open-ended series.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was established in 1987 with the mission of advancing the visual arts by making substantial gifts of Warhol’s work to university and college museums, galleries, and art collections across the United States. The foundation’s activity has focused on serving the needs of artists by funding the institutions that support them and promoting their health, welfare, and first amendment rights.
This unique exhibit will be on view in The Strand Center Main Gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh from February 1 to February 22, 2019. The exhibition opening is Friday, February 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.
