Between packed beaches, pool parties and other outdoor gatherings across the U.S., many Americans celebrated Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial beginning of summer without face masks or social distancing — guidelines that have been urged by health officials. The holiday weekend push for a return to normal life came as health officials continued to warn that the virus is not yet contained. In 10 states, the number of new cases is on the decline, while it seems to be steady in 22 states. But in 18 states — including Georgia, Arkansas, California and Alabama — the number of new cases is rising.
Here’s what else you need to know about COVID-19 around the world:
• There have been more than 1.6 million coronavirus cases and more than 98,000 deaths in the United States.
• The World Health Organization has temporarily halted studying hydroxychloroquine as a potential COVID-19 treatment due to safety concerns.
• President Donald Trump honored America’s war dead Monday in back-to-back Memorial Day appearances colored by an epic struggle off the battlefield — against the coronavirus. |
