Gods and Monsters Jim Kobak at The Strand Center for the Arts in May

PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Strand Center for the Arts is thrilled to host “Gods and Monsters,” artwork created by painter, Jim Kobak, in the Main Gallery.

Jim Kobak grew up as a metal-head in the suburban dystopia of Northern New Jersey. He was highly influenced by the Reagan-Era Thrash metal and hardcore punk movement blowing up in and around NYC in the late 1980s. Always a fan of the visuals portrayed on album covers by the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and countless thrash metal bands, Kobak has spent a lifetime drawing and painting skulls, demons, monsters, and other bloody nightmare-inducing images. Now he has put together a collection of morbid creations for his show at The Strand Center for the Arts, entitled “Gods and Monsters,” using various combinations of enamel spray paint, brushwork and inks to create his intense imagery.

Concerning the exhibition, Kobak stated: “Humanity has always had a need for the supernatural. We have always sought mighty and grotesque otherworldly beings to inspire and torment our souls. Benevolent gods and heroes have always been pitted against nefarious monsters and demons. Yet, these creations are simply reflections of ourselves. They are personifications of a world we cannot yet control. We all have gods, and we all have monsters. They are us. The question then remains, when do your gods become monsters? … Perhaps all your gods are really monsters.”

Jim Kobak resides in Peru, NY, and has had successful shows at the Peru Library, Ausable Forks Library, the SPACE Gallery in Burlington and the ROTA Gallery in Plattsburgh and is excited to be showing his work now at the Strand Gallery.

This unique exhibit will be on view in The Strand Center Main Gallery at 23 Brinkerhoff Street in Plattsburgh from May 7 to May 28, 2021. This event is free to the public. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.
