Octoberfest Run Brings a Saturday Morning to Life
Peru – There was a lot of excitement at the Peru Fire House as hundreds of runners, bicyclists, and walkers gathered for the 2021 Octoberfest Half marathon, 5K, 10K, and 40K bike events. With the help of her family and many others, Ruth Hamilton LaClair has organized the event each year (except 2020, the COVID-19 year) since per father Robert “Chip” Hamilton’s passing in 2011. Chip, the beloved owner of Hamilton Funeral Home, passed on January 27, 2011, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. All proceeds from today’s event go to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
Organizing the Octoberfest is a massive undertaking. Dozens of volunteers step forward to help. Many local businesses lend their support. Signs directing the participants and chalk marks have appeared in and around the Peru hamlet for several days. Participants started arriving at 7:15 a.m. The 5K and 10K participants left the firehouse just after 9 a.m.
Three cheers to the Peru High School Band members and Director Todd Pray who serenaded the runners as they went down School Street.
