Joe Remillard’s “Adirondack Visions” comes home to us
By John T. Ryan
Plattsburgh – Last Saturday afternoon at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Burke Gallery, Peru, NY native Joe Remillard narrated a gallery walkthrough of his solo art exhibition Adirondack Visions. Many people attended, including several Peru residents and members of his family. The previous evening almost 200 people enjoyed the opening reception.
A June 9th Press-Republican story headline read – “Joe Remillard paints his way home.” In many respects, it’s the perfect headline. While Remillard lives in and works in Atlanta, Georgia, the works on display depict Adirondack scenes, especially at the Remillard family farm here in Peru, along the shores of Lake Champlain and the nearby Adirondacks.
After graduating from Peru High School (74), Siena College, and Albany Law School, Joe Remillard didn’t envision himself having a solo art exhibition at a state university. It was only after practicing law that he decided to pursue his first love – the world of art. Today, Remillard possesses a master of fine arts in painting and drawing from the University of Georgia and a full professorship at the 40,000-student Kennesaw State University in Atlanta. He has won significant international awards and major magazines have recognized his talent on covers and feature articles.
Anyone who loves realistic art, farm life, the Adirondacks or knows the Remillard family should enjoy this exhibition. It’s unique. It’s personal. It should appeal to anyone who loves North Country life. Even if you’ve never attended an art exhibition in your life, give this a try.
Joe Remillard’s works are displayed Tuesday – Sunday, Noon to 4 p.m. until August 5, 2022, at the Burke Gallery, Plattsburgh State Art Museum, Myers Fine Arts, 101 Broad St., Plattsburgh.
