Water system schedule, new zoning law, and Heyworth/Mason Park updates among topics at Monday’s Town Board meeting

The Town Board held their regular meeting Monday evening, May 14, 2012. All board members attended. The meeting began with a slideshow presentation by representatives of AES showing the projected schedule of the pending water system upgrade.
The work should progress as follows:
June 1st – AES provides construction plans to Clinton County Health Dept. for review/approval.
End of June to mid-July – Pittsburgh Tank & Tower will complete the mixing system and painting on the water tower.
Mid-August – Construction commences at Filter Plant & Reservoir.
Mid-March 2013 – Quarterly disinfection byproduct test results will be below Health Department maximum limits.
Mid-June 2013 – Extended construction such as paving and site restoration will be completed.
December 20, 2013 – Meet Clinton County Health Dept. deadline for compliance. (No more blue paper in the mail!)
Some minor disruption to service, and a possible short-term water boil orders may occur in some areas, and will be well publicized in advance.
The New Zoning Law was also discussed. At an information meeting on May 8, and a Public Hearing held prior to the Town Board Meeting, several residence expressed concerns over the proposed Neighborhood Commercial Zones being considered. Chair of the New Zoning Committee Rodney Brown explained to the Board that the purpose of these zones is to allow for an expansion of light commercial development in areas of convenience outside the Hamlet. The opinion of the residents close to these proposed zones is almost entirely negative. It was questioned why they are needed considering the small size of Peru and the existence of stores like M&M & Rock’s Grocery.
Town Supervisor Pete Glushko informed the group that the Board would take their concerns into consideration and meet with the New Zoning Committee to discuss possible alternatives.
Work on the Heyworth/Mason Park is continuing. Town Councilor Jim Douglass met with Park Coordinator Adele Douglas to schedule of work to be done. In the next several weeks new benches and interpretive signs will be installed, a crushed stone path will be formed along the river edge around the perimeter of the park, and the Dog Park fencing will be installed upon FEMA approval. A volunteer group will clear brush so that a path can connect the Heyworth/Mason Park to the Little Ausable Park.
In other business the Board:
- Approved the purchase of a new mower/snow blower with a cap-conversion kit in the amount of $35,265.80. This piece of equipment will be primarily used to clear the sidewalks during winter snowfalls.
- Discussed an ongoing problem of gas being siphoned from town vehicles. In the last several days 125 gallons of fuel (approx. $500) has been stolen. Locking caps have been ordered.
- Set an Employee Handbook Workshop date on Tuesday, June 29th at 6:30 PM downstairs at the Town Hall.
