Home and business energy costs continue to rise – Here’s a way to save money
By John T. Ryan
People attending the October 11th Peru Town Board meeting learned that New Yorkers of all income levels as well as small businesses and non-profits can qualify for energy assistance, energy upgrades, special financing and cashback programs. Town Counselor Brandy McDonald invited the people who administer the programs to the Town Board meeting.Joint Council of Economic Opportunity (JCEO) Energy Services Project Coordinator Heather Donnelly explained that there are programs for homeowners and renters at all income levels. Typical improvements include installing a new furnace, new windows, insulation, a more efficient refrigerator or repairing an existing system.
Some grants pay up to 50% of a project’s cost. For example, an individual making a $10,000 furnace upgrade could be eligible to receive a $5,000 grant. Higher income people can receive at least 10% cashback. Heather Donnelly is a great person to start your inquiry with by calling her 518-561-6310. Click here for the program website.
New York State Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) representative Jamie Rogers told the board members that most home energy audits can be done at no charge. In fact, a family with a household income below $126,600 qualifies for a free audit and there is some assistance at higher income levels. Rogers said every house has a different energy conservation issue. He said, “Each house is unique just like each individual is unique.” Small business and non-profits with 10 employees or less may also qualify for free audits and other assistance.
