Neighbor concerned with brush piled close to his building

By John T. Ryan Posted March 11, 2009 at 12:21 p.m. and updated 1:09 p.m.

A correction was made on March 12, 2009 at 6:55 a.m. Mr. Healy’s is concerned with brush being piled adjacent to his property and being a fire hazard, rather than limbs overhanging his building.

The Peru Town Board conducted its March 9, 2009 meeting immediately following the Open Burning Law Public Hearing. During the public comment portion of the meeting resident Rick Healy addressed the Board. Healy said he owns property at the corner of Pleasant and School Street. He said that the owners of an adjacent School Street property hired a tree removal service service a few years ago and that the service had left brush piled adjacent to his barn. Healy is concerned that the brush is a fire hazard.
The house is located at 5 School Street. Board members said they would research the Town’s legal options. Councilman Powers said the property has been a problem over several years. The property owner Mr. Dale Bradley told the Peru Gazette he has owned the property since 1980 and that a number of issues have come up over the years.

In other actions the Board:

  • Received reports from Department Heads.
  • Discussed a Highway Department Crew Foreman issue in public and executive session.
  • Approved a renewal of the Charter Communications Franchise Agreement.
  • Approved a contract renewal with Engineering Ventures Inc. (This company is on call for major Town engineering and design projects).
  • Looked over Roberts Rules of Order as a possible future rule of parliamentary procedure.
  • Scheduled a March 18th 6:30 p.m. liability insurance workshop at which time Latramore Insurance and Northern Insurance will meet with the Board. These two companies have given the Town bids for liability insurance coverage for 2009. Last year the Town paid $71,992 for its liability insurance. The Board is attempting to reduce these costs. The companies have analyzed each other’s bids and will explain to the Board why it has the better option. Councilman Cortland Forrence remarked that insurance is a very complex subject and it is very difficult to compare the competing policies.

Councilman Peter Glushko chaired this meeting in the absence of Supervisor Donald Covel who was in Florida.
