Community College Honor Society to assist Elmore SCPA

Alpha Pi Tau, a registered chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh, NY, is starting a service project to collect items and monetary donations on behalf of the Elmore SPCA located in Peru.  In addition to being an animal shelter, the Elmore SPCA takes in animals that have been physically abused.  Kelly Allen, shelter manager, one of the only certified humane investigative response officers in Clinton County, who investigates the growing number of animal abuse cases, and prosecutes the offenders in court.

According to the national news over 1 million animals will be abandoned this year due to the economy.  We are already seeing the results of this problem at the Elmore SPCA animal shelter with strays entering almost daily from area towns.  Due to limited shelter facilities and a greater number of abandoned animals, the SPCA is often unable to accept animals being surrendered by their owners.

Currently, the shelter is in urgent need of cash donations to ensure that the SPCA remains open to provide a safe haven for the many animals in need.

“We are collecting donations of a variety of items,” Tina Recore, the chapter’s social-service chairperson, said in a news release. “Any amount donated would be greatly appreciated.”

The Alpha Pi Tau chapter has compiled an Elmore SPCA Wish List of constantly needed supplies.  At this point in time canned dog food, such as Pedigree or Alpo, is one of the most important items needed.  Other items which the shelter needs are:  Clorox brand bleach, concentrated laundry soap, clay non-scoopable cat litter, liquid dish detergent, paper towels, canned cat food (Friskies or 9 Lives is preferred), dry cat food, Dad’s Bite Size Meal dry dog food (sold in Sam’s), pet treats, Lysol spray, Mr. Clean, collars, six-foot leashes, durable pet toys, stainless steel pet food dishes, plastic litter pans, blankets, towels and monetary donations for medical costs.

Donated items can be brought to the first-floor lobby of Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh, NY and placed in a box marked “Animal Shelter Donations.”  Donations will be collected from April 26th thru May15th.

People who want to donate money can mail checks directly to the Elmore SPCA   P.O. Box 686, Peru, NY  12972.  If you need further information about this fund raiser, please contact Tina Recore (PTK Honor Society Social Service Chairperson) at 594-3938.

Alpha Pi Tau will sponsor a quilt raffle on Saturday, April 25, 2009 in the Champlain Center Mall, in partnership with the Elmore SPCAs membership drive.  Raffle tickets for the beautifully handmade quilt will sell for 1 ticket for $1 or 6 for $5.  Tickets may also be purchased at Clinton Community College.  Please contact Tina Recore  594-3938.  All proceeds will go to directly benefit the Elmore SPCA shelter animals.
