By John T. Ryan
The Peru Youth Commission celebrated its opening day on Saturday, May 30th, at the Laphams Mills Field. Youth Commission Director John Flynn welcomed everyone and introduced all the coaches to the large crowd of onlookers. Over 250 Peru youths will participate in the twenty-one team program between now and the end of July. Youth Commission Chairwoman Lisa Gonyo said, “We’re off to the start of another great season. We have a great bunch of kids and coaches.” (More Photos) Gonyo said people step forward to be coaches and there’s no problem getting volunteers. Gonyo was a volunteer herself today working with others to serve hot dogs, burgers and beverages to the crowd.
Gonyo said to remind everyone about the Youth Commission’s four week Summer Camp Program. Each day there will be at least two activities. The program begins July 6th and children can sign up at Peru Central School.
When baseball and softball are completed in late July, the Youth Commission’s soccer program will begin and will continue until late October.
