Blaine issues outdoor wood boiler guidelines

Posted September 29, 2008 by John T. Ryan

Zoning Enforcement Officer Paul Blaine has issued guidelines for Peru’s recently passed Outdoor Wood Boiler (OWB) law. They were  issued in an attempt to clarify the law’s primary provisions. Blaine, however, did caution, “This list should not be considered a complete list of all requirements and anyone wishing clarification on their individual installation should contact my office for assistance.”

Requirements for new installations:

  • Building Permit
  • Site Plan review by Planning Board
  • Minimum stack height with spark arrester dependent on emission rate of OWB
  • Located in rear of lot and screened from view
  • 150 feet or 70 feet minimum setback from property lines dependent on emission rate of OWB

Requirements for existing installations:

  • Building Permit application submission by 12/22/08
  • Site Plan review by Planning Board
  • 15 feet stack height with spark arrester
  • Screened from view
  • Proof of purchase date

Prohibitions:

  • Not for use in connection with any commercial enterprise
  • Not for use in Zones H-C, H-2, H-3, H-4, COM-1 or within 750 feet of such zones, schools and Town operated parks
  • Emissions above stated annual and hourly rates
  • Operated during the period of September through May only
