Board passes new OWB Law

By John T. Ryan

The Peru Town Board conducted its business meeting on Monday, July 13, 2009. The Board passed Local Law #6 regulating Outdoor Wood Boilers. The amended law will be published on the Town of Peru website in the very near future. Only minor changes were made to the law originally passed in September 2008.

During the public input portion of the meeting resident Ken Mott voiced a harassment complaintagainst the Code Enforcement Officer regarding the issuance of certain certificates of occupancy. He presented his documentation to the Board. Supervisor Donald Covel promised that the Town Attorney Donald Biggs would look into the matter and that someone would get back to him in one to two weeks. (Contacted by the Peru Gazette Code Enforcement Officer Paul Blaine stated that he has attempted to work with Mr. Mott to rectify certain code violations, but the violations continue to exist.)

Donald McBrayer noted the passing of former Town Council member Bernard Rock.

McBrayer also noted that the Town’s new website was featured on the front page of the July 11, 2009 Free Trader Today newspaper.  McBrayer, who serves as the webmaster, said he will provide a monthly report to the Town Council.

 In other Action the Board:

  •  Voted to hire a surveyor for the Heyworth Mason Park development project. The cost will be covered by a previously received grant.
  •  Discussed the Valcour Sewage District pumping and control system.  Supervisor Covel proposed replacing the pumps and control system saying that since he came into office the district taxes have been reduced from $1.61 to $.96 per thousand. He said new equipment could be purchased with a tax rate increase of $.41 per thousand resulting in improved service and reduced employee overtime. The Board scheduled a workshop and a Special Meeting for Friday, July 17 at 8:30 a.m. to discuss and possibly approve the issue.
  • Received reports from all departments with the exception of recreation and dog control. Counselor Peter Glushko was excused from this meeting because he was out of town.
