Sewage system upgrade explained to residents

Peru – On Monday, January 14, 2020 the Peru Town Board, Water/Sewer Superintendent Courtney Tetrault and AES Engineering representatives conducted an informational meeting on Peru’s planned $4.6 million sewage system upgrade. Approximately 11,000 feet of new sewage lines and two new pumping stations will be installed. Most of the current sewer pipes were installed almost 100 years ago. Some are in danger of collapsing. The Maiden Lane pump station is undersized. The system was not built to handle the Peru’s strong residential growth. Bids are expected be advertised within the next 60 days with work hopefully beginning this spring and completed by late fall.

Letters announcing the meeting were sent to residents directly impacted by work that will take place on or near their property. All sewer district users will be impacted by increased sewer rates. Supervisor Brandy McDonald said the increase for the average user would be $24 to $29 per month. The exact amount will not be known until bids come in. The project is being financed by a $1 million NYS grant and long-term (38-year) bonding.
