Peru’s Post Office Has a New Leader
By John T. Ryan
Peru – Since April, people stopping at the Peru Post Office have noticed a new face behind the counter. Seann Cassidy is our Officer in Charge (OIC) or temporary postmaster; however, he expects to be officially named Peru’s postmaster by late summer or early fall. Cassidy is a 25-year U.S. Postal Service veteran, the first 22 years as a letter carrier in his hometown Lake Placid. Before being assigned to Peru, he served as OIC in Saranac Lake, Keene, and Chestertown.
Cassidy has experienced a few challenges in his new job. The postal service is in the midst of a significant reorganization, including a hiring freeze. When longtime employees Dale Clemons and Denise Durgan retired, their positions couldn’t be filled, meaning employees on loan from nearby communities fill the positions. It takes time to acquire even a portion of the local knowledge that Clemons and Durgan possessed.
Peru’s five rural carriers and two clerks bring mail to about 2,700 rural addresses and 1,000 post office boxes daily. On a slow day, they sort 3,500 to 4,000 letters, plus almost 400 packages. During holidays, the letter numbers rise to about 10,000.
Seann Cassidy says he will do his best to continue in the office’s reputation for friendly, competent service. He said, “I’ll be stressing good customer service for both rural delivery and at the counter.” Cassidy says he plans to stay in Peru for a long time.
Welcome to Peru, Seann. The Peru Gazette wishes you the very best. You hold a vital position in our small town.
