The North Country Celebrates Veterans Day
By John T. Ryan
DAV Chapter 179 did a wonderful job organizing the Veterans Day today’s ceremony at Plattsburgh Barracks Veterans Park at the U.S. Oval.
State Senator Dan Stec was outstanding recalling his days in the Navy and the sailor’s unity and mutual respect no matter their race, politics, religion, sexual orientation, or background. He asked everyone to work for that unity right in the North Country. He said we’re united in our mutual love of this nation. Let this unity extend to our daily lives and associations. He said, “The Navy has a saying, ‘One Ship, One Crew.’ That’s how our country needs to start thinking of itself.”
The DAV honored the Saranac Girls & Boys Soccer Teams and Saranac Central School for raising $28,532 to assist the DAV in purchasing a new van to transport local veterans to the Albany VA hospital.
Then they honored the Beartracks Band with a plaque. Beartracks recorded a CD to raise money for the van. Band member Tom Venne wrote a song titled, ‘Beartracks’ Tribute to Disabled American Veterans’ which he sang today. On the CD his sister Julie sang harmony and Freeman Corey played the fiddle. Roy Hurd volunteered the use of his recording studio. The CD was a hot item after today’s ceremonies.
