Backflow Prevention Ordinance Enacted
By Donald McBrayer
A Public Hearing on the Backflow Prevention Device Ordinance was held on Monday, March 22 at 6:30 PM.
Under this ordinance any commercial property or residential property with three or more dwellings hooked to town water will be required to have a backflow prevention device installed. Single-family homes and duplexes are exempt. This devise will prevent possibly contaminated water from reentering the town water system from private water systems in the event of a pressure drop. The device must be engineer approved to meet established specs, be professionally installed, and be inspected annually. The property owner will be responsible for the cost of the device, installation, and inspections. Properties required to have a backflow prevention device that do not comply could be fined.
Water/Sewer Superintendent, Greg Timmons, stated this program is state mandated, has been in place for years in many towns and will get Peru caught up to Health Department standards. He estimates that in Peru, 25 to 30 properties will be required to install a backflow prevention device.
Following the Public Hearing, the Town Board enacted the ordinance.
