Gazette surpasses 30,000 visits in one year!
On September 4th The Peru Gazette celebrated its second anniversary by surpassing 30,000 visits during the past year. During the past twelve months The Gazette has received 30,043 visits by almost 8,000 people from every state except North Dakota. That’s an average of 82 visits a day.
Many people speculate about the future of newspapers and journalism. Having just returned from Washington D.C. where I observed a significant decrease in the number of newspapers being delivered to doorsteps, I am not optimistic about the future of the print media. Most young Americans rely on the Internet for their news.
The Peru Gazette is an experiment in local journalism being conducted by a retired individual and a few wonderful contributors who believe that local government actions and issues must be reported to safeguard our democracy. Our local daily newspaper reports when it is called or when it hears about a controversial issue. Its reporters are not present often enough to develop an in-depth knowledge of local government.
While I believe The Peru Gazette has achieved a certain measure of success it could be greatly improved if more Peru residents came forth to report on local events, history and issues. Certainly there must be people in our community who would like to do this type of reporting. If you or someone you know would like to become a contributor please email me at editor@perugazette.com. Suggestions are also always welcome.
Thanks to everyone who reads The Peru Gazette and to everyone who forwards The Gazette to their online friends.
