Stefanik on board with Biden-McCarthy debt-ceiling deal

Below statement for the office of Congresswoman Elise Stefanik

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Kevin McCarthy (CA-20), Majority Leader Steve Scalise (LA-01), Majority Whip Tom Emmer (MN-06), and Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (NY-21) issued the following statement on the release of legislative text for the Fiscal Responsibility Act:

“The American people elected House Republicans to stop the out-of-control inflationary spending that has broken family budgets. Today, we secured a historic series of wins worthy of the American people.

“We cut spending year-over-year for the first time in over a decade while fully funding national defense and veterans’ health benefits, include the largest rescission in history by clawing back billions in unspent COVID funds, and achieve consequential work requirements to welfare programs to lift Americans out of poverty and grow the economy. We enact for the first time into law ‘Pay-Go’ rules for the Executive Branch, which forces the Executive Branch to find dollar-for-dollar savings in the government for costly rules and regulations, so that executive overreach is reined in and held accountable. And in order to help grow our economy and lower costs for the American people, we streamline the process for permitting in America and begin to prune an overgrown federal bureaucracy that has expanded during the Biden administration.

“The Fiscal Responsibility Act does what is responsible for our children, what is possible in divided government, and what is required by our principles and promises. Only because of Republicans’ resolve did we achieve this transformative change to how Washington operates.”

Green Acres Restaurant property owner wants to talk

The Peru Gazette received this message from Stephen Miller, the owner of the Green Acres Restaurant property. The current restaurant operator, Donna Rowley, plans to close her business by June 30.
Stephen Miller
Cell phone number 518 420 4357
I would be more than willing to discuss the restaurant with anyone that might be interested in it. I will be listing it with my realtor in the next few days . When I purchased Green Acres over 10 years ago, it needed a lot of work and the equipment was very outdated. Within a few years of purchasing Green Acres , I replaced every piece of restaurant equipment, hot water tank and heating, plus switched to natural gas. The electric bill went from almost $2,000 a month to $500 a month with all the energy efficient equipment. I hate to sell or auction the equipment off because I know it will never be a restaurant again.

Plattsburgh, NY- Healing Grace Center for Hope and Healing is expanding their services thanks inpart to a grant from the Foundation at CVPH. The Foundation has awarded Healing Grace a Community Project Grant in support of their new program designed to support women going through early miscarriage. This program provides medical supplies and comfort items to women experiencing miscarriage at home.
A miscarriage is a pregnancy loss prior to 20 weeks gestation. It is often a time of many emotions and overwhelming physical symptoms. The Foundation’s grant has provided the means to get this program off the ground and reach a community of women that need all the support, love and grace. We all need to know we are not alone when we have in the depths of our most painful moments.

Donna Rowley plans to close, but Green Acres Restaurant is still open for business.

L-R Chelsea Taylor and Donna Rowley

Green Acres Restaurant

By John T Ryan

“Green Acres will be closing on June 30… Want to express how much y’all mean to me…your support..meeting many fantastic people..thank you..my heart.”

Those words are a portion of Donna Rowley’s May 29 Facebook post. This morning Rowley hadn’t changed her mind. She commented, “I’ll keep operating as long as my inventory holds out. I can’t find any help. My hands are tied. It’s hard with just two people.”

The other person Rowley referred to is her waitress Chelsea Taylor who’s decided to go to work closer to home. A mom with kids, Chelsea, explained, “It’s for stability reasons. After ten years, Donna wasn’t sure what direction she was going in.” When Green Acres closes, Chelsea will be working at Adirondack Mountain Coffee in Upper Jay.

Rowley hopes someone will come in and take the restaurant over. She said, “I don’t own the property, but I’ll take good care of it until the day I leave. I keep it painted. I mow the lawn. I planned to have work done on the driveway and shampoo the carpet.”

This morning, Keeseville residents Debbie Bola and Paul Wisher were Green Acres’ first two customers. Paul commented, “We’ve been coming here every day since before the pandemic. The food is good. The service is good. And Debbie doesn’t like to cook, so I have to take her out!”

Donna Rowley has been operating Green Acres Restaurant at 3065 Main St. since April 27, 2013. Unfortunately, an employee shortage during the pandemic forced her to close for a month between October 3, 2021, and November 3, 2021.

On October 25, 2021, she wrote on Facebook, “I’ve been cleaning and painting and realized I couldn’t imagine anyone else at Green Acres..my baby, my love. Please Be patient. We need baby steps to see how this will work.”

Another celebration of our region’s glorious history

Clinton County American Legion Commander Joe Patnode

The official groundbreaking on May 26, 2023.

A large number of people turned out for the groundbreaking.

By John T. Ryan

May 26, 2023 – Plattsburgh Excitement was in the air Friday as many supporters attended the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Battlefield Memorial Gateway. Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman told the large gathering he was so excited he had trouble sleeping the previous night. Located on Route 9 across from Clare and Carls Restaurant, the seven-acre Battlefield Memorial Gateway Park will connect what Cashman called the “triangle of history,” the mainland, Crab Island, and Valcour Island. The park’s ultimate goal is to honor our veterans and its history and to educate both residents and visitors on that history.

Local historian John Rock approached Cashman with the Gateway concept shortly after Cashman took office six years ago. Over the past five years, planning and fundraising have been taking place. Cashman praised Assemblyman Billy Jones for securing $250,000 in state monies, saying, “Without those funds, we would not be here today.” Jones referred to the park as a public-private partnership, emphasizing that more funding and “sweat equity” are needed to complete the project.

The American Legion and several local businesses have committed to the project. Clinton County American Legion Commander Joe Patnode told the gathering, “This park will be for all veterans, educating our youth, as well as many adults, including myself, on how this area was instrumental in the development of the greatest Constitutional Republic ever formed.”

Michael Cashman, Assemblyman Jones, and John Rock believe the park will attract visitors to our region. Rock stated, “I believe this will be a destination point for tourism… This is one of the most historic sites in the nation that I know of that has not been shown the honor that has taken place here and its importance in the birth of our country.” Rock noted that fifty Americans who died in the War of 1812 are buried on Crab Island. He said, “Until a flag pole was erected on the island in 2022, their names had not been displayed since September 11, 1814.”

Historian John Rock, who conceived the Gateway

Supervisor Casham directed people to where an amphitheater and playground will be constructed. He envisions teachers bringing history classes to the park.

Plans call for the park to be opened in phases to be complete for our nation’s Semiquincenntial (America 250) on July 4, 2026. Luck Brothers Construction is currently working on phase 1.

Honor those killed in battle

Photos of St. Augustine’s Cemetery in Peru, where members and auxiliary members of VFW Memorial Post 308 erected flags this Friday. They mark the graves of many people who have served our nation in the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U. S. Marines, U.S. Coast Guard, and Space Force.
Memorial Day, formerly Decoration Day (the last Monday in May), is for honoring those who have died in our nation’s wars. It originated during the Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those killed in battle.
One of the best ways to honor our fallen heroes is to visit a local cemetery this weekend. You won’t believe how many local men and women served and died in our nation’s wars. Bring your children. Since 1973, when our country introduced the volunteer military, fewer and fewer of our children know someone who died when serving our nation.
